SoldierSim

SoldierSim

SoldierSim is an effective simulation tool developed specifically to enhance and optimize Soldier performance across various tasks and conditions. Built on the advanced Santos engine, SoldierSim allows for realistic, physics-based load carriage simulations tailored to diverse Warfighter anthropometries, equipment designs, and mission tasks. Its intuitive drag-and-drop interface ensures ease of use, while predictive capabilities and in-depth analysis tools provide a comprehensive view of how load, motion, and environment impact Warfighter readiness and performance. SoldierSim includes four key modules: the Load Configuration Tool, the Simulation Builder, the and Extended Load Carriage analysis tool, and the equipment import tool. Together, these modules empower users to customize equipment configurations, simulate different load scenarios, and assess Warfighter biomechanics under a range of environmental conditions evaluating important parameters such as energy expenditures, torque (stress) at major joints, hydration levels, and fatigue. From evaluating the spatial needs of Warfighter teams to providing insights into equipment attachment points and alignment, SoldierSim is designed to support the operational readiness of Soldiers and other military personnel. SoldierSim delivers a unique, simulation-driven approach to Warfighter performance optimization, essential for mission planning and safety. SoldierSim is built on the Santosplatform and has undergone significant validation. In addition to University of Iowa researchers, the software has undergone validation by NSRDEC, the Aberdeen Test Center, the Naval Postgraduate School, Mississippi State University, Clarkson University, the US Council for Automotive Research (a consortium of Ford, General Motors, and Chrysler), Caterpillar, and Honda, among others.

SoldierSIM

SoldierSim’s advanced capabilities cater to a comprehensive simulation and analysis of Warfighter
performance, offering multiple modes designed to enhance tactical preparation and equipment
configuration.

01
Warrior Configuration Mode
This mode enables users to fully customize a Warfighter’s configuration, including personal protective equipment (PPE), weapons, and gear tailored to specific roles (billets). The flexibility of this tool allows for detailed adjustments of loadouts and restricts ranges of motion according to equipment choices. Analysts can perform static posture assessments, aiming envelope analysis, eye relief evaluations, and visualize the Warfighter’s center of mass in each configuration. By precisely configuring Warfighters in this mode, users can optimize gear arrangement and confirm compatibility, helping to identify limitations or areas of improvement before physical testing or deployment.
02
Simulation Builder Mode
With Simulation Builder, users select tasks from an extensive library, simulating real-world Warfighting scenarios to evaluate performance under various loads. Tasks include stair ascent (both steep and standard), vertical jumps, ladder climbs, and extended load carriage, drawn from the Load Effects Assessment Program (LEAP) course. This mode allows for precise, physics-driven assessments of Warfighter metrics like energy expenditure, fatigue, and hydration in response to unique loading conditions and environmental factors. By predicting motion and encumbrances, Simulation Builder empowers analysts to perform trade-off analyses, inform equipment requirements, and test new products in a virtual environment, reducing costs and timelines associated with live testing.
03
Extended Load Carriage
The Extended Load Carriage module simulates the effects of prolonged equipment-bearing tasks on the Warfighter, considering individualized anthropometric models and gear distribution. After configuring a load and selecting environmental conditions, users can simulate missions such as a 16-mile march, tailoring factors like terrain type, slope, speed, time of day, fitness level, and climate conditions. This capability allows for an in-depth analysis of Warfighter endurance, physiological strain, and overall load impact, supporting mission planners in understanding performance limits in various operational scenarios.
04
Equipment Import Toolkit
This powerful tool allows users to import new equipment models in CAD format, such as helmets or body armor, and configure detailed specifications like weight and inertia properties. These characteristics directly impact dynamic calculations and movement simulations, making this toolkit invaluable for analyzing how new equipment will interact with the Warfighter and affect performance. By enabling users to test equipment’s physical impact in real-time, the Equipment Import Toolkit streamlines the evaluation of new designs, helping to identify optimal gear configurations and reduce risks associated with deployment.
